Blackberry’s news blog has been hacked by rioters?

In a move that shows that the issue of rioting is not just organised by under educated “yoof” the blackberry blog has recently come under attack and hacked after it was rumoured that the Canadian smartphone manufacturer would cooperate with the UK police over the use of its smartphones to organise the riots in London, Manchester and Birmingham.

TeaMp0isoN to blame?

The hacking team that go by the name of TeaMp0isoN seem to have taken credit for the message that was left on the blog:

“Dear Rim; You Will _NOT_ assist the UK Police because if u do innocent members of the public who were at the wrong place at the wrong time and owned a blackberry will get charged for no reason at all,”

This was part of the message the other section threatened to release private information about RIM employees.

How they managed to post on the blog was not clear but security blogger Graham Cluley stated that it could have been down to a software vulnerability or due to an admin password being hacked.

The hack was perhaps spurred on by a twitter update by the UK blackberry account that said:

“We feel for those impacted by the riots in London. We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can.”

Meanwhile another reason could have been a RIM spokesman discussing how they would cooperate fully with the British legal system in handing over encrypted messages.

37% of UK’s youth use blackberry’s down to the free messaging system that the operating system offers.

Finding the looters will be much easier with the use of social networks, modern CCTV and the general public, a list of some of the sites set up to “shop” a looter is offered below.
